BPPV is the most common cause of vertigo. It is caused by a structural problem with complex anatomy of the inner ear (vestibular organ). Click this link for a more detailed explanation of what causes BPPV. Briefly, calcium carbonate crystals get dislodged from one part of the vestibular organ and go into another part where they do not belong, causing vertigo with position change or large head movements. There is no medication that will cure BPPV and it has been our experience that vestibular suppressants like Antivert or Meclizine, which are commonly prescribed for dizziness, do not even help with the symptoms. BPPV is a structural problem and requires physical movement to cure. That is why positional maneuvers such as the Epley maneuver have been found to be the best treatment for BPPV. You may have been given pictures of positional exercises or seen videos of them on the internet. Some of the videos are great, but others are not so good. Some may be good, but might not be the right ones for your type of BPPV. Thus, having a thorough examination by a healthcare provider specially trained in treating BPPV is important in determining if your vertigo is caused by BPPV, what type it is, and which of the positional maneuvers are right for your type of BPPV. At NPBTC, we can do all of that and even teach you the how to perform the right technique so you can treat yourself successfully! Here is a video on the self treatment for the most common form of BPPV. We provide this video for our patients when we determine that it is the proper treatment for them:
